The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was a complex body of teaching and ritual magical practice brought together Kabbalistic cosmology, the Rosicrucian initiation system, ritual magic, Egyptology, astrology, tarot, and various other such magical and occult streams. Under the twin genuises of its founders S. L. "MacGregor" Mathers (1854-1918) and William Wynn Westcott (1848- 1925), these were woven into a single all-embracing metaphysical and practical system. Mathers and Wescott did such a good job that the influence of the Golden Dawn is still felt today; indeed, together with Blavatsky's Theosophy, the Golden Dawn was one of the parents of the contemporary Western esotericism.
