A UMPC For The Rugged Outdoors: The Trimble Yuma

yuma A UMPC For The Rugged Outdoors: The Trimble Yuma

A few days ago, Trimble announced the Yuma Rugged Tablet Computer, a Windows XP device intended for use through rough environment conditions. While Yuma bills it a tablet, though, the blogosphere seems bent on calling it a UMPC - honestly, both sound appropriate so we’ll just be happy calling it one or the other.

The device itself measures 9 x 5 inches and is about two inches thick, with a healthy amount of protective housing protruding on all sides. It features a 7 inch touch-capable display with WVGA resolution and a widescreen aspect ratio. Intended for rugged outdoor use, the screen is glare-free and is readable under sunlight. Other specs include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, a 32 GB SSD (you can’t really be rugged if you’re using an optical disk), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, built-in GPS and an SDIO slot.

It offers a flexible operating temperature range of -22 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit as well as ample protection against bumps and drops. Additionally, the UMPC is dust-proof and should be able to last in water at depths of up to 3.3 feet. We expect the GPS to be top-notch (you’ll be hauling this with you out into the wild, after all) and it comes with two cameras, both fitted with geotagging functions.

There’s no word on price for the Trimble Yuma but shipping is expected to commence sometime in April.
