Looted Art - Charles Wheeler

Looted Art

For more than 50 years Charles Wheeler, one of the BBC's most respected journalists, carried a tiny portrait on his travels.

Charles embarks on a quest to solve the mystery behind this portrait he was given as a present in Germany over five decades ago, searching for its rightful home.

Who is the mysterious young woman depicted in the portrait and where did she come from?

This programme is a tale of a tiny painting, set against a large canvas of war, politics and looted art - and also a tribute to Charles Wheeler, who died a few months ago.

First broadcast on 22 September 2008
