Microtrends: Traffic sign hacking
In the US, people have been hacking the digital message boards on roads and rail stations, leaving travellers sniggering.
– They include a roadside sign in Austin, Texas, that warned of an outbreak of the undead: "Zombies ahead." A Department of Transportation spokesman told TV news crews: “It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for.”
– As photos of the signs were posted on blogs, they became a web phenomenon, and started popping up all over the country.
– One, echoing the American Revolution, read: “OMG the British r coming.” In West Palm Beach, Florida, motorists in a jam were given a supposedly sympathetic message from their Mayor: “I Am Mad Too! – Lois.” Other pranksters changed a New York subway sign to read: “Pretty Girls don’t ride the subway.”
– The trend hasn’t crossed the Atlantic yet. But if you see any signs warning of an impending apocalypse, it’s probably nothing. Probably.
